Depression
Depression is a cognitive disorder that can significantly impair your ability to work, maintain relationships, and simply make it through the day. Depression can be episodic or persistent and people can experience a number of adverse mental and whole-body health effects. They are also at significantly greater risk for suicidal thoughts and self-harm. Therapy is an important aspect of care for those people who are struggling with depression. Being able to share your thoughts and feelings in a safe environment is an important first step to addressing depressive thoughts. Through our sessions together, we will affirm and support you as well as provide guidance and tools to allow you to overcome symptoms of depression.
Anxiety
Everyone experiences anxiety from time to time. It is a normal and healthy response to certain situations. Experiencing anxiety is often adaptive in helping us identify unsafe situations and can guide us to make appropriate choices. However, for some people, anxiety is acute or persistent, causing significant distress and greatly interfering with daily life functioning. Therapy is often an effective treatment for those with an anxiety disorder. Therapy can help you identify how anxiety is impacting your life and help you to develop strategies for managing anxiety in a healthy way to allow you to live the life you want to live.
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
Many people think of soldiers when they hear post-traumatic stress disorder or PTSD, and while many military men and women struggle with this disorder, it is by no means exclusive to those in the armed forces. PTSD can make it difficult for someone to recover following a frightening, traumatic, or dangerous event. This can be something like a car accident, witnessing a violent act or death, or being the victim of violence, including sexual trauma, abusive relationships, and childhood abuse. If you find yourself avoiding reminders of the event, reexperiencing the event when triggered, having a persistent negative change in mood, over or underreacting to stimulus, or any of the other symptoms of PTSD, I can help you build on your cognitive strengths and break out of the cycle of negative thinking and fear.
Birth Trauma
This is a specific form of post-traumatic stress disorder. Mothers who experience a traumatic birth can have many of the same symptoms of PTSD sufferers. Perception of trauma is different for everyone, but some of the situations that can lead to a need for birth trauma therapy include:
Emergency labor
Feeling of lost control during birth
Poor treatment by doctors or hospital staff during birth
Fear for child’s safety
Painful or lengthy labor
Stillbirth
Delivery of an unhealthy child or need for an infant to stay in the NICU
Postpartum Mood Disorder
Postpartum mood disorder, sometimes called postpartum depression, effects millions of moms in the US each year. Without treatment, new mothers usually experience difficulty bonding with their child, performing self-care, and maintaining relationships. Mothers with postpartum mood disorder may neglect their child, be overprotective, or exhibit a number of other atypical behaviors. If you or a loved one are struggling with postpartum mood disorder, please don’t go it alone. We have years of experience and advanced training that allows us to help women who are struggling with this disorder. We have had our own struggles following the birth of my children, and we’re passionate about helping mothers maintain optimal perinatal mental health.
